In 1981, a German youth team, participating in a sports - exchange program, came to Israel's town of Zichron Yaakov with one wheel. Shlomo Cohen, than the manager of the Hapoel club in Zichron Yaakov, was impressed with their performance and decided to develop this sport in Israel. He bought the wheel from them and opened the first club of the wheel gymnastics in his home town - Zichron Yaakov. Dedy Choen, Avi Nahari, Moses Benizri (Bar - On) and Niv Levy were some of the first coaches in the country. Later on, Willy Vekssler opened another club in Haifa in cooperation with the sports department of the city. The sport evolved rapidly and in 1987, at the Hapoel 14th Summit Games, Shlomo Cohen organized an outstanding performance using 60 wheels and athlets.
There are currently about 350 athletes who train wheel gymnastics in Israel. The country's main clubs are in Zichron Yaakov, Hof Hacarmel, Tivon and Timrat. Athletes teams are organized by age groups and level. Over the years wheel gymnastics brought a lot of pride to Israel as our national team won first, second, and third places in world championships.
